[Example] Configuring an Alarm-Triggered Remote Notification with Automatic Sending, No Escalation

Scenario: To free up facility operators for other tasks, you want to configure a remote notification that will alert them of important events even when they are not in front of the management station. In this example you will create a notification that is sent out automatically (without operator intervention) by email (or SMS as fallback) to the Operators recipient group when a Fault-category event occurs related to the Management System discipline, and the event source is in alarm. For background information, see Overview of Address Book, Remote Notifications, and Reactions.

  • System Manager is in Engineering mode.
  1. In System Browser, select Application View.
  1. Select Applications > Remote Notifications.
  • The RENO Configurator tab displays.
  1. In the General Settings expander, specify the behavior of the remote notification:
    a. Select the Active check box. This enables the notification to be sent when it is triggered.
    b. In the Starting Mode drop-down list, select Automatic.
    c. In the Delay field, enter 60. This means that the system will dispatch the notification 60 seconds after the triggering event unless there is operator intervention.
    d. In the Can be Stopped drop-down list, select Yes. This means that an operator will be able to abort the notification only during the 60 second time delay before it is sent.
  1. In the Recipients expander, select the recipient group of the notification as follows:
    a. In the Address Book area, in the Filter drop-down list, select Groups.
    b. Drag-and-drop the Operators group from the Address Book area to the Recipient/Members list on the left.
  • The Operators group displays in the Recipient/Members list, with the total number of contacts in the group shown alongside.
  1. In the Message Tailoring expander, compose the notification messages as follows:
    a. In the Device drop-down list, select E-Mail. Drag-and-drop any automatic tags you want to use from the Message Tags list into the Subject and Body fields. You can also directly enter text. The subject line cannot be empty.
    b. In the Device drop-down list, select SMS. Drag-and-drop any automatic tags you want to use from the Message Tags list into the Body fields. You can also directly enter text. The maximum message length is 480 characters (divided into three messages). Longer text messages will be cut off.
  1. In the Triggers expander, open the Events expander.
  1. Specify the event and the corresponding status change that will cause the notification to be sent as follows:
    a. In the Status changes drop-down list, select New event comes.
    b. Click New, to add a new row.
    c. In the Category column, select = Fault.
    d. In the Discipline column, select = Management Station.
  1. Click Save As .
  1. In the Save Object As dialog box, select the main Remote Notifications folder as the destination where you want to save the new remote notification.
  • In the Name field enter Management System Fault to Operators.
  • Click OK.
  • The new remote notification object displays in System Browser, and is enabled by default.
